Bob graduated from Oakland's University High School in 1943 and served as a Marine in the South Pacific. After the war he attended San Francisco City College on the GI Bill and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. During his 50 years as an educator, he taught at DT Davis and Ridgeview and tutored the children of Japanese Airlines pilots-in-training.

Bob enjoyed gardening, also camping, backpacking and fishing trips with his family to the high lakes of the Sierras. He hung up his rod and reel to become the primary caregiver for his wife in her declining years.

His final years were spent at home, writing stories from his life.
