Nancy Ann Courtney

1933-2016

4th generation Napa, Nancy Courtney, 82, died January 29, 2016.  She was born on June 15, 1933 in Napa, California. She was the third of five children and attended St. John's Catholic School and Napa Union High School in Napa. In the fall, after graduating from high school, Nancy studied in San Francisco to become a dental assistant. Before she could finish her studies in the City she married Rex Conkright in 1952. They became the parents of five children, Bruce, Carolyn, Patrick, Mary Ellen, and Susan. She had 10 grandchildren & 8 great grand children and one great-great grand daughter. She later married Jim Courtney.

Nancy worked almost all of her adult life at a variety of jobs including a tannery, a furniture store, several auto agencies, a police department, and a country club. She was a book keeper. Nancy worked for the Napa Police Department from 1971 to 1974 doing identification profiling from witnesses' descriptions. Nancy's next positions were book keeper and secretary for the maintenance department at the Silverado Country Club. She served in that capacity for 16 years and retired in 1992.

Nancy was a long time member of the Lions Club - Berryessa Lions and Napa Host Lions. She served two terms on the Napa County Grand Jury. Nancy was also a member of Cobb Mountain Hunting Club for approximately 25 years.

Nancy was an avid sports fan. She played golf and belonged to a bowling league. She was on the Napa High School rifle team that finished 4th in a national competition.  She also loved deer hunting with  her older brother, Brooks. She had season tickets to the San Francisco Forty Niners for over a decade and went from Napa, by bus, to all of the Niner's home games.

Nancy was very active while living at Lake Berryessa. She volunteered to write a newsletter and to manage various fund raisers for the local community at the 'Lake' such as crab feeds and poker runs. She also enjoyed playing bingo and cards and was a longtime member at the Berryessa Senior Center.

Nancy had the distinction of being a great-great grandmother. She hosted many family events at the club house in the mobile home park on Silverado Trail in Napa where she lived for about 20 years. It is hard for anyone who knew Nancy to ever remember when she did not have a dog. The only thing she loved more than her dogs were her children. Nancy was a fine mother and an outstanding person. If you ever met her you would remember her for her congenial personality and her exceptional kindness.

A service to honor her life will be held at Tulocay Chapel on Thursday, February 11 at 11am, followed by a reception at Silverado  Pines Clubhouse, 150 Silverado Trail, Napa.  Memories may be shared with the family on-line at www.tulocaycemetery.org.
