James Roland Askins

James Roland Askins laid his fishing pole to rest on July 15, 2015 after a courageous cancer battle.

Jim was born in Hartman, Arkansas on January 9,1924 to Jeff and Leota Askins. He moved to Oklahoma as a young child where he grew up in the farming communities and learned what hard (survival) work was---especially after losing his mother in his early teen years. He moved to Clarksburg, CA where his older sister, Hazel, was like a surrogate mother to him. He attended Clarksburg High where he enjoyed football and track. Jim was allowed an early graduation to enlist in the Army and served his country from 1943-1947.

After his Army discharge he returned to Clinton, OK and was reunited with a childhood friend, Alene Keil. They were married in September of 1948 and farmed for four years while welcoming their first born, Peggy, and then son, Ronald. California was calling Jim back as he had 2 sisters and a brother in the Sacramento and Napa areas. After settling in Napa in 1955, their second son, Phillip, was welcomed.

Jim had various tractor jobs before he began his laborer career at Napa Sanitation District. He learned the works of the underground sewer system and knew the Napa streets well retiring as an inspector in 1981. He then enjoyed fishing, bowling and woodworking.

James Roland Askins is survived by his devoted and caring wife, Alene; daughter Peggy Frost, sons Ronald Askins and Phillip Askins (Rebecca). Grandchildren Amanda and Daniel Frost (Melissa), Shanna Askins, Andrew and Macie Askins as well as 5 great-grandchildren with everyone residing in Napa. He is also survived by his sister, Louise McCullough, nieces, nephews and scattered cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Tulocay Chapel on Monday, July 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. All friends, relatives and loved ones are welcome.
