James P. Hornberger

Dr. James (Jim) Hornberger, 78, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2015 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. A California native, Jim graduated from Burlingame High. He attended Willamette University and the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1960. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Jim had a distinguished career as a Kaiser Optometrist where he was highly respected by his colleagues and beloved by his patients. A 40-year resident of Napa, Jim retired from Kaiser in 1996 but remained an active member of the community. His love for dogs led him to Paws for Healing where he and his much loved Golden Retriever, Corky, worked as a therapy dog team. In addition, he owned an operated a dog boarding kennel during his retirement years. He also volunteered forMeals on Wheels. Throughout his life, he remained an avid Cal Bears fan and was an active supporter of the UC alumni.

His family and friends will always remember him for his charm, wit, and friendly demeanor. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Estelle, and his sisters Nancy and Jane. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jeanne, his daughter Michelle and son Steve. His niece Kelly Crawford Piatt, and nephews Gary and Gordy Crawford and their families also survive him. We give special thanks to his caregivers Cheska Payton and Eilyn Bell who brought him much joy and delight every day.
