Walt Lema never met a person he could not talk to, always ready for conversation and a glass of Sangiovese! A bachelor until 38, he met Carol, turned in his Playboy Key; and married the love of his life. They spent 51 years together living life to the fullest - three kids, two grandkids, five great-grandkids, lifelong friends, infamous potlucks, annual golf tournaments ("Portuguese Open"); and travel - circling the globe twice. They never stopped holding hands until Carol's passing in January 2020.
Born and reared in San Leandro, Walt attended Archdiocese of San Francisco, St. Bernard School in Oakland, St. Joseph's High School in Alameda; and college at University of San Francisco, UC Berkeley, and Cal Poly where he achieved a degree in engineering.
An all-out good guy - smart, curious, athletic, and loving with a mischievous streak until the end. As a grandfather, he loved every moment of Shane and Shelby's lives and shared a special bond with them. Known as "Gumps" his heart was full and there was a twinkle in his eyes with love for Rylee, Nolan, Max, Ryan, and Koa.
On August 22, Walt joined Carol and they are once again holding hands and drinking a glass of champagne.
Survived by daughters: Pamyla Means and Mindy Hall; forever son-in-law, Dave Means; grandchildren: Shane Means (Jill), Shelby Means (Chad DeLaca); and great-grandchildren: Rylee, Nolan, Max, Ryan, and Koa.
Special thanks to Shelby who navigated his care with the utmost love and grace. Your advocacy meant the world to him and the family.
In honor of his wishes there will be no funeral or service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Collabria Care of Napa.
Happy trails Pops!
With love - your family.
