Husband, father, grandfather and proud veteran, Virgil Allan Dennis of Napa passed on October 21st.
Born in Hollis, Oklahoma September 30, 1949, to father James Dennis and mother Jewel Lynn, Virgil and his siblings Cheryl and Joyce, moved with his mother to the Bay Area as children. The family lived in San Francisco, where he met his future wife Ruth when they were just 12 years old.
During the height of the Vietnam War, Virgil enlisted in the army at 17 years old and spent 9 months in Hawaii for basic jungle training. He joined the United States 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as the Old Guard, and was deployed to fight in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in 1967-1968. He was stationed briefly in Fort Hood Texas after marrying wife Ruth, and after serving his country, moved back to the Bay Area living in Fremont for 20 years and moving to Napa in 1992. Virgil worked as mechanic for San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) until he retired as Senior Maintenance Controller after 40 years.
Virgil will be remembered for his devotion to his family, sarcastic humor, gentle wisdom, pride in his military service and his country, love of restoring vintage cars and his beloved home, the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Ruth, son Jeffery Dennis, daughter Lisa (Bobby) Pond, grandsons Noah and Jude, sister Cheryl Haegley and many adoring nieces and nephews. A graveside service followed by a lunch celebration of life will be held at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa 11 am on Monday, November 1st. The family invites friends and family to attend.
