Ronald Gordon Waggoner, 82, of Napa, California, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 22, 1942, in Champaign, Illinois, to George and Bonnie Waggoner.
Ron’s love of travel and curiosity about the world began early, when his family spent a year living in England during his childhood. After graduating from college, he embarked on a year-long journey through Asia, backpacking across Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Vietnam—a formative experience that deepened his appreciation for global cultures and
perspectives.
He went on to dedicate 36 years of service as an analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency, where his expertise spanned Cold War strategies with NATO, as well as Soviet aircraft and missile systems, and nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. A graduate of the Air War College, Ron was deeply respected for his intellect, professionalism, and lifelong commitment to public service.
Above all, Ron was a devoted husband, father, and brother. He cherished his family and delighted in supporting his children’s endeavors—whether writing spirited soccer game recaps for the local paper, volunteering for playground construction, or driving his daughter across the country (and through Canada) during two major moves. His warmth, humor, and unwavering support enriched the lives of those who knew him best.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Helena; his son, Gordon, and daughter-in-law, Anne; his daughter, Bonnie Million, and son-in-law, Zach; and his brother, Gary.
His life will be celebrated at a gathering on Saturday, November 15th, at 11 am at CrossWalk Community Church in Napa, which can be live-streamed or viewed later on their YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/CrossWalkNapa/Live. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please donate to your local PBS station in honor of Ron’s love of all things Ken Burns. If you have a cherished memory or story of Ron (embarrassing ones especially!), please share them with the family via rwaggs.stories@gmail.com
