Robert Mathis Obituary

Dec. 9, 1941—Feb. 7, 2023

NAPA—Robert William Mathis, Dr. Bill, was born in Longview, Washington on December 9, 1941 and went to his heavenly home on February 7, 2023. Bill was the son of Robert and Reba Mathis whom he has joined in Heaven along with his first born child, Michelle.

Bill is survived by his three children, Chad Mathis of Waterville, WA; Brandi Westling of Stanwood, WA and Brett Mathis of Meridian, ID. He was the grandfather of three grandchildren; Noelle, Preston and Savannah. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Itzen and his nephew, William, and niece, Jennifer.

Bill grew up in Longview, WA and graduated from Robert A. Long High School in 1960. He began his college studies thereafter at The University of Puget Sound where he earned his Bachelor’s degree. After many years of hard work and dedication, he earned his Master’s degree from the University of Portland, and then his PhD from the University of South Dakota. He accepted his first position as Director of Medical Services at Washington State Prison system and thereafter as Director of Metal Health Services and Head Psychologist at Napa State Hospital.

Within 10 years of settling in Napa Valley, he would launch and build The Mathis Group, his own consulting company, which he ran until the day he passed. He would spend five decades working as an Occupational Management Psychologist and as an expert for city municipalities, water districts, school districts, police and fire departments.

Bill was fortunate to travel the world. Some of his adventures included a golfing trip to Scotland and Ireland, visiting the Holy Land of Israel, seeing parts of Asia and on many occasions travelled to Europe touring Italy, France, and Germany. His favorite times were spent annually with family in the Hawaiian Islands, and Arizona for Spring Training baseball.

As a long-term resident of Napa, Bill was an active member and lived at Silverado Country Club for over 30 years. He made many friends, enjoyed great golf, and entertained at many of the PGA tournaments held at Silverado. Bill spent his last few months visiting and traveling with family, something he absolutely treasured.

Our father was the most loving, caring, tenacious, appreciative and giving man. He is in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, please make charitable contributions to The Father’s House, Napa.
