Richard John Hildebrand, age 96, of Vallejo, CA, passed away on December 11, 2023, in American Canyon, CA.
He was born in Philadelphia September 18, 1927, to Floyd and Lenora Hildebrand. He graduated from Morsetown High School in 1945. Soon after he was drafted into the US Army Aircorp. Two years later he switched to the Air Force and then served a total of 22 years. He went on to a second career as a photographer with the Napa Valley Register for approximately 25 years. He enjoyed flying model air planes and running electric trains. He was a long time member of the local model train club. He was also a long time member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church where he served as a lay reader.
He is survived by his three living daughters: Jean (John) Clement of Elbert, CO; Valerie Paynter (David Huffmon) of Vallejo, CA; and Mary Hildebrand (Jim Hike) of Rustburg, VA. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Celia Hildebrand, and their oldest daughter, Kathleen Triem.
A funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1917 Third St. in Napa on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. The service will be live streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/3960138. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa. Richard was much loved by his family and will be greatly missed. He is the last surviving member of his generation.
The family would like to thank Greenhills Care Home in American Canyon for the excellent care given him the last ten months of his life and Bristol Hospice for the support provided during his final months.
