Norma Jean Ingalls was born on December 22, 1934, the last of seven children, to Hubert and Maggie Anna Lindsey in Louisville, Kentucky. She is survived by five children and their spouses, seven grandchildren and their spouses, 11 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law and his wife and numerous nephews and nieces.
She played field hockey, softball and was on the girls' championship basketball team in high school. She sang in the Glee Club and participated in events at The Cabbage Patch. While in high school, she met James M. Ingalls. Norma's brother, Bob and Jim served in the U.S. Army together. One year, Jim was unable to obtain a plane or train ticket home for the holidays. Bob invited Jim to come home with him and the rest was history.
Jim and Norma corresponded for several years. Once Jim finished his military service and had procured a job, he asked Norma to marry him. At the age of 18, Norma came out to California on her own to meet her future in-laws and extended family. They were married on June 18, 1953 in Jim's grandparent's parlor in Calistoga, the current Craftsman Inn.
Norma loved children and she and Jim decided to start a family. In 1954, a daughter was born, followed by a second daughter in 1955 and a son in 1956. Jim accepted a teaching job and the family moved to Burney, California in 1960. Norma was an excellent cook and learned how to prepare duck, goose, pheasant and venison which Jim brought home from hunting trips. She also learned to knit and sew clothing; as well as can fruits and vegetables for her family. In 1961, a second son was born followed by a third son in 1962.
In 1963, the family moved back to Napa and Norma lived in the same home until 2022. She acquired more skills and learned to crotchet, quilt, garden and make a variety of crafts. In 1967, she decided it was time to work outside the home. Norma was employed by Barwick and Duttons for 1-2 years. She took night business classes at NV College and was offered a job as office manager for the Napa Garbage Company. She worked there for approximately 25 years until her retirement.
Norma was always involved in her children's and grandchildren's lives. She was also involved in teaching young 4-H girls how to sew and boys how to throw fast balls. She attended her grandchildren's sporting events and cheered them on, as well as accompanied them to and from school and helped with homework.
Norma had a great ability to fix mechanical items and could repair office machines, home appliances, install ceiling fans; as well as change the oil, spark plugs and tires on her car.
Norma was widowed in 1995 at the age of 61 and did not remarry. She continued to keep herself busy with projects and the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Norma knew the importance of giving to those less fortunate and often gave clothing and food to those in need. She also donated to many charities. Norma had good common sense, a keen sense of humor, a sharp intellect and could size someone up quickly. She also would give her opinion when asked. She was devoted to her family and loved them deeply. Norma was surrounded by her loved ones in the last days and moments of her life when she passed on February 12, 2023.
