Juan Guzman, 78, of Napa, California passed away peacefully at his home on July 23, 2024.
He was born on January 27, 1946 in Compostela, Nayarit in Mexico to Rafael Guzman Villasenor and Florentina Vera Corona. As the eldest of 14 children, he began working at a young age to help support the family.
After working in Mexico's electric power industry, Juan moved to Napa in his early 20s seeking the American Dream. He worked in manufacturing at Cultured Stone for four decades until his retirement in 2014.
Juan is survived by his dear friend and former spouse, Berta Mendez Guzman, and their four children. They created a blended family when Juan adopted Berta's three children from a previous marriage: Beatriz, Rudy and Jesse. Later, he and Berta were blessed with a daughter, Jacqueline, completing their family. Although Juan and Berta eventually divorced, they remained close friends. Juan is also survived by many siblings, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Juan was known for his strong work ethic, grit, and for his great passion for música norteña. When he wasn't building or fixing something, he was playing music and singing with his band "Juan El Norteño y sus Braveros del Norte." He was a self-taught musician, excelling in both the bajo sexto guitar and accordion.
He will be remembered for marching to the beat of his own drum, forging his own path, and embracing a bold sense of style. He provided for his loved ones with constant care and embodied individuality and courage. Through his musical recordings, his voice and energy will continue to touch hearts and live on.
On August 7, 2024, there will be a visitation and viewing between 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Tulocay Cemetery chapel: 411 Coombsville Rd., Napa. Funeral services will begin at 12 p.m., followed by an onsite reception.
