John Godden Obituary

John passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on May 12, 2026

Born September 23, 1942 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He lived all across California before eventually settling in Napa in 2012.

John played football into the professional level and stayed in the sport as a coach for many years. He played on the offensive line at Fullerton College and was named a Junior College All-American there, then went on to play linebacker for the San Diego State Aztecs. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 16th round of the 1965 NFL Draft, but an injury prevented him from playing in the league. He spent the rest of his professional career playing linebacker for the Hartford Charter Oaks for one season.

After retiring from play, John continued to give back to the sport through coaching. He served as a defensive coach at Cal State Fullerton and Fresno State, an inside linebacker coach at Stanford, and a defensive coordinator at San Jose State University.

John was named Most Inspirational Player at San Diego State in 1964, and the award reflected his toughness, leadership, and dedication to the sport. He was respected and admired by those who played with, coached with, and were coached by him.

After his coaching career, he went into the pavement sealcoat business and retired in 2004.

John loved to play golf, make those around him laugh, and watch his favorite football and baseball teams.

He met his forever love Susan Murphy in 1990. They were married for 34 years, which they filled with love and adventures in San Jose, Folsom, and Napa.

John is survived by his wife Susan Murphy-Godden, his 4 sons John, Brian, Damon, and Travis Godden, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his parents John and Delores Godden.
