John German Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that the family of John German announces his peaceful passing on May 5, 2018 at home surrounded by his family with Hospice attending.

John (Jack as he was known by family and friends) was born on July 15, 1929 in Ukiah, CA. Jack attended Ukiah Union High school where he was active in all sports. He was class president his senior year, graduating in 1947. John attended San Jose State College graduating in 1951 with a BA in history. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952 going on to Officer Candidate School with a Commission as 2nd Lieutenant.

Jack married Donna Murray of San Francisco in 1952. While in the Air Force, the family moved around the world including assignments in San Antonio, TX (basic training and O.C.S.), Denver , CO; Tokyo, Japan; Honolulu, HI; Tacoma, WA; Boulder, CO; Boston MA; Whitby, England; Thailand; and Virginia, retiring in 1972 to live in Napa.

His second career was as administrator of Family Support Division with Solano County District Attorney Office and after 15 years he took his second retirement to the Napa Valley Country Club. There he played 3 or 4 days a week with his many golf buddies. He made three hole in one's and also achieved Club Champion status one year. He managed his best low handicap of 8 which he only maintained for a month!

In 1977, his wife Donna began a 20 year career as a travel agent. Together they enjoyed extensive travels around the world visiting 54 countries, most trips lasting 3 to 4 weeks. They traveled to all the continents except Antarctica. One of Jack's favorite journey's was four weeks in Africa including safari in Kenya and in South Africa, a two day experience on the luxury Blue Train equal or superior to the Orient Express of Europe, which was traveled as well.

Along with travel and golf, his other hobby was gardening, especially his vegetables which he shared with neighbors and friends. How many zucchini recipes are there? This gave him much pleasure.

Jack lived such a long, rich life. He is preceded in death by his son Robert, sister Betty, and brother Wally. He is survived by his loving wife Donna of 65 years, his son John (Janet); two daughters Terri (Candice) and Sharon; grandson John David (Stacy); granddaughter Jennifer Shipley (Al); great grandsons James and Daniel Shipley; granddaughter Sarah Thompson; grandson Steffan Thompson (Cynthia); great-grandson Giovani Thompson. Also nephews Michael and Roger German and Patrick Taylor. Also sister-in-law Laura German (Tootsie).

We will remember Jack for his devotion to his family and friends, his humor, sly grin, honesty, and big heart. We shall all miss him. A private family celebration of his life will be held at Ukiah Cemetery on July 9, 2018 at 11:00 am, followed by lunch. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Collabria Care, Hospice in Napa. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care Jack and his family received from all at Collabria.
