James Storman Obituary

Jim Storman passed away peacefully on May 25, 2023 in Napa, California at the age of 96.

Jim was born on July 7, 1926 in San Francisco to Martin Louis Storman and Mary Frances Higgins. After graduating from high school in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as an engineer aboard the destroyer USS Robert K Huntington in the South Pacific. In August 1945, the Huntington joined the Fast Carrier Task Force off the Japanese coast and escorted the battleship Missouri into Tokyo Bay to receive the official Japanese surrender, marking the official end of World War II..

After leaving the Navy in 1946, Jim began work as a machinist at Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. He married Frances "Nancy" Ann Cartwright in 1949 and they raised five children in Daly City. In 1974 they moved to Napa where Jim worked as a machinist instructor at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Beginning in 1981, he and Nancy enjoyed a well-deserved retirement until Nancy passed away after a long battle with cancer in 1988.

Jim married Lois Carson in 1990 and they took up residence in Calistoga, Yountville and most recently, Napa. Jim's warm smile and booming laugh were well known throughout the area as he delighted in bowling, playing bocce, cards, bingo, and one of his favorite pastimes, Left-Right-Center. He was an active member of SIR (Sons in Retirement), and he and Lois spent many years traveling the world together on numerous golf outings. Jim was at his happiest when surrounded by his family and will be lovingly remembered for his outgoing nature, undying optimism, and wonderful sense of humor.

Jim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lois; brother Martin "Dave" (Joan) Storman; four sons Michael Storman, Mark Storman, Kevin (Lynn) Storman, Peter (Diane) Storman; daughter Catherine (Doug) McCann; step-daughters Patricia Lyons and Janice Lyons; step-son Thomas (Karen) Zanardi; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as many nephews, nieces, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Davis in 2017.
