Gerhard Wolf, 89, (December 9, 1933-June 20, 2023) died after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Gerhard was born in Stuttgart, Germany to Margaret and Franz Wolf. He and his brother grew up living in a castle and playing on the campus of the University of Hohenheim. He left Germany with a dream of exploring the world, beginning in Switzerland. He was trained as a master painter and had no trouble finding work. He lived in the Artic then on to Canada. Traveling through the U.S, He liked San Francisco and became the manager of a large Painting contracting firm.
He always wanted to teach, so he got his credentials and taught History, Math and Painting and Decorating at John O'Connell Vocational and Technical high school in San Francisco. He taught union painting apprentices for City College of San Francisco. He loved teaching and received the San Francisco Mayor’s Teacher of the Year award.
He met his wife while backpacking in Yosemite. It was the perfect match. They soon married and spent a six-month honeymoon camping across the continent of Africa with the end goal of introducing his bride to his family in Germany.
He continued his adventures, returning to different parts of Africa many times. He travelled through Greece, Turkey, Russia, China, Taiwan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Morocco, Mexico, Brazil,
Gerhard could be called a true renaissance man. He raced bicycles, played and coached soccer, restored antiques, and restored a Victorian house and was presented with a plaque by Napa Landmarks. He loved music, fine wine, collected art, read history extensively and could dance the night away. He loved collecting stamps and became a judge at Philatelic exhibitions. His soft voice, gentle demeanor and kind soul endeared him to all and made him the neighborhood cat magnet --one of which accompanied him when he took walks.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Grinsell Wolf, his son, Franz, his brother, Werner (Inge), nephews, Klaus, Tobias and Sama
