On Friday, April 26, Eugenia “Gene” Palaologos Broumas, died peacefully of natural causes on
April 26 at Providence Queen of the Valley Hospital in in Napa, California. She was 89.
A longtime Washingtonian, and resident of Chevy Chase Maryland, Gene was born in 1934 in
Youngstown Ohio to Greek immigrants Anthony and Dimitra Palaologos. She graduated from
the Knox school in Cooperstown New York, and then attended Wheaton College in Norton
Massachusetts, finally receiving her degree at the University of Maryland Abroad campus in
Mainz, Germany.
Gene was a devoted military wife who lived both abroad and throughout the United States as
she supported her husband’s Army career. Her husband, Lt. Col. Andre George Broumas, was
killed in action in Vietnam in 1969.
From 1976 until 1980 , Gene worked at the Presidents Commission on Mental Health under
First Lady Rosalynn Carter. She then worked at the National Institutes of Mental Health for 16
years, and finally at Wells Fargo Financial Advisors in Bethesda, Maryland until her retirement in
1991.
Gene was known and loved by many for her generosity, her gift for entertaining, and a lifelong
commitment to social justice. She was also known for her intellect, wide knowledge of current
events and the arts, and by her amazing Greek cooking.
Gene is survived by her children, Jamie Broumas of Napa California, Andre G. Broumas Jr. (Marc
Stabile) of New York City, and two grandchildren, Julia van der Vink (Robert Black) of Napa
California, and Nicholas van der Vink (Reid Bergin), of New York City. She was predeceased by
her daughter, Margaret Noel Broumas.
Gene will be interred at The United States Military Academy in West Point, New York alongside
her husband Andre and daughter Margaret.
