We mournfully announce the passing of Dorothy A. Fagundes,
88, of Napa, California. Dorothy left us on October 31 st ,
peacefully after a short illness.
Dorothy was born on January 25, 1936 in San Francisco, CA.
The daughter of John Webster and Ann Dorothy (Gaffney)
Douse. She is predeceased by her parents and her husband of
53 years, Ronald D. Fagundes.
Dorothy is survived by her sister Catherine Joan (Douse) Hoey
of Vacaville, extended family, and many friends locally and
internationally. Dorothy’s family moved to Vallejo during her
middle school years, she graduated from St. Vincent Ferrer High School, Vallejo.
Dorothy enjoyed a 44-year teaching career. She began teaching in Parochial Schools in
Los Angeles and San Francisco. Loving the rural life, she enjoyed teaching at Napa
County’s one-room schoolhouse, Wooden Valley Elementary School.
Diversified teaching for young students came naturally to Dorothy. She enjoyed
teaching and administrating at St. Catherine Parochial Elementary School in Vallejo,
prior to the building of the school.
Dorothy later earned her Special Education Certification so she could focus on teaching
reading. After time with the John Swett Unified School District, she was excited to
work with the Travis Unified School District in Fairfield, CA. It was here that she was
able to maximize her talents and was an integral part in Travis AFB Elementary School
increased ratings, thus becoming one of the top California ranked schools.
During her teaching career, Dorothy also assisted with the operation and management
of the family Tishara-Fagundes Livestock Ranch in Jamieson Canyon. She shared her
love for many of their ranch animals with her students, bringing “guest” visitors to the
classroom. Family and friends may remember some of the ranch residents, such as:
Dollar the horse, Ronie the calf, Balloon Belly the sheep, Spotty the dog, and Blackjack
the cat.
Dorothy’s energy and charisma will be missed. She had a passion for researching
genealogy and traveling to spend time with friends and family.
