Dolores died of "old age" on February 18, 2023, one week short of her 94th birthday. She died peacefully at Aegis assisted living in Napa, CA with Tom, her husband of 69 years, and daughter Ruth by her side. Tom kissed her forehead and said "Dolores, we had a good life".
Born Maria Dolores Espadas in Uvalde, TX to Jose and Jesusa Espadas. She had five siblings: Eva, Roberto, Olivia, Rene and Rachel. Dolores valued education having been told by her father that this was the way to better oneself. She met Tom at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX where she worked as a secretary and he was stationed in the Army. They were married in 1954 and raised two children in Arlington, VA.
Dolores was an avid reader, enjoyed classical music, entertaining and travel. She rose through the ranks in her career working as a secretary at The World Bank and at a high profile law firm in Washington, D.C. After retiring in San Antonio, TX and traveling the world, Tom and Dolores moved to Napa, CA to be near their grandchildren. Dolores and Tom found community in the Unitarian church through the years. Dolores generously donated her time teaching ESL, citizenship classes, at Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party. She was always available to friends in need.
Dolores is survived by her husband, Tom; son, Phil; daughter, Ruth; sister, Rachel Tafolla; grandchildren, Dexter and Ella and many nieces and nephews. There will be no service at her request.
