Dennis Steven Marks

Dennis Steven Marks, age 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, California. In his final moments, he was surrounded by his beloved wife, Celeste; her sister, Leigh; his son, Ryan; and his daughter-in-law, Andrea. One of his greatest joys-his granddaughter, Leona-brought him a bright smile with a loving visit earlier that day.

Born on March 20, 1947, in San Francisco, Dennis was the son of the late James Myer Marks and Erma Andre La Pierre. He was raised in San Mateo County and graduated from Capuchino High School with the Class of 1965. Shortly afterward, he attended the College of San Mateo, where he studied Business Administration and Management.

Throughout his early career, Dennis worked for several prominent companies in South San Francisco, including DuPont, Eastman Kodak, and Wilson & George Meyer. In the mid-1990s, he joined Toshiba as a senior procurement manager-a role he held with pride and dedication until his retirement in October 2010.

One of the most meaningful moments of Dennis's life came in early 1982 with the birth of his son, Ryan. Becoming a father reshaped his priorities-he chose to stay in the Bay Area to remain a present and devoted dad. Dennis and Ryan shared a deep bond, spending countless hours together enjoying their favorite pastimes: baseball and movies. Whether cheering on the San Francisco Giants or discussing plot twists and characters on screen, Dennis treasured every moment. As Ryan grew older, their connection only strengthened. Dennis was endlessly proud of the man his son became and never missed a chance to tell him so.

Beyond his professional life, Dennis was passionately involved in San Francisco's live music scene. Beginning in the early 1990s, he worked behind the scenes on production crews at legendary venues such as The Warfield, The Fillmore, and Shoreline Amphitheatre. He found real fulfillment in the camaraderie backstage and the magic of bringing music to life for others.

Later in life, Dennis met and in 2002 married the love of his life, Celeste. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with adventure, creativity, and unwavering love. The couple lived throughout Northern California and briefly in Arizona before settling in Napa. They shared a passion for travel- Scotland, Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean-where they explored art galleries, embraced local cultures and enjoyed peaceful ocean cruises.

Retirement did not slow Dennis down. He continued traveling with Celeste, painting in oil, working behind the scenes at concerts (mainly with Live in the Vineyard and at The Uptown Theatre), and tending to his tranquil Zen garden. He was a dog lover, a lifelong Giants fan and a gifted storyteller whose warmth, wit, and wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Of all his roles, none brought Dennis more joy than being "Bumpa" to his granddaughter, Leona. He adored her-bringing her little gifts (especially books), reading to her, and treasuring every moment of her childhood. He was also lovingly known as "Bumpa" to his step-grandchildren Wesley and Grant, sharing many fun family dinners and game nights together.

Dennis will be remembered for his vibrant spirit and boundless energy-a man who seemed to carry light with him wherever he went. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing tales from his life that were equal parts heartfelt, humorous, and wise. Whether recounting a backstage mishap at a concert, a quirky travel adventure, or a tender family memory, Dennis captivated his listeners and left them smiling. His laughter was contagious, his presence uplifting, and his kindness unwavering. A true original, Dennis lived life with passion, generosity, and authenticity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable stories that will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

Dennis is survived by his devoted wife, Celeste Marks; his son, Ryan J. Marks, daughter-in-law, Andrea K. Marks; and his cherished granddaughter, Leona Marks (7) of San Francisco, CA; He is also survived by his Step-son Joseph T. Austria; his wife Lizzie Austria, and their children, Wesley (11) and Grant (8), also of San Francisco. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
