Barbara Smith passed suddenly to Jesus on September 15, 2023, in her longtime Napa home. She was 76 years old.
Barbara Ann Smith was born on November 26, 1946, at Parks Victory Hospital in Napa, CA. She was the only child of parents, William Vernon Smith and Sarah Ruth Walker Smith. She was raised in Napa and attended Lincoln Elementary, Redwood Junior High, and Napa High, graduating in 1964. She graduated from Napa Junior College with her A.A. degree and then attended and graduated from Ohio State in 1969, majoring in Economics. She attained her Master's Degree from Cal State-Sacramento in Management Information Systems.
Barbara was brilliant and yet incredibly humble. She was a life-long student and natural mentor. She easily took on the role of "coming alongside" and bringing foundational support while staying in the background. She participated in conferences and courses even into her last weeks, always aware of improving her knowledge and skills. She desired to keep up to date on changes and issues in her industry and acquired several valued certifications in the process.
Her career was in finance, computer technologies and accounting. She worked for various local tax and accounting businesses as well as being a consultant through her own business. She was a great problem solver and brought strategic help to many small businesses and non-profits - some on a voluntary basis. She led and influenced through her strong support to many entities and individuals over her 50-plus-year career.
Barbara loved and lived in Napa her whole life.
She had a deep faith and relationship with God and was very loved and respected in her work and church relationships. She was raised at the Napa First Church of God and was an active member of the church for decades, serving in the weekly music ministry by helping plan and lead congregational worship, singing and primarily playing the piano. She later became a member at First Christian Church in Napa, and for the past 27 years has been active in small discipling groups, prayer, Bible Study Fellowship, volunteering in the financial aspects of the church, serving on the First Christian School board and supporting the worship music with her piano playing abilities and love for music ministry.
Barbara was a strong supporter of the arts, locally and in the Bay Area. She donated her time and resources in her affiliations to Music in the Vineyards and Chamber Music in Napa Valley. She was an active member of Napa High Alumni and a lifetime Alumni member of Cal State Sacramento. She loved all things music, especially live concerts and theater events. She was an avid Giants fan and faithful follower of her alma mater Ohio State Buckeyes football team.
She was upbeat and positive with a great sense of humor and wit. She loved to read, garden, and go on road trips. But her greatest love and loyalty was to Jesus Christ and His loving and righteous ways. She was devoted to deepening her intimacy with God and helping others do the same.
Barbara was pre-deceased by her father and mother; cousins: George Raymond Walker, and Wesley Walker. She is survived by cousins: Russel Walker of San Jose, CA; Gary Walker (Verna) of Livermore, CA; Sharon Martin of Glendora, CA; Ronald (Shelly) Walker of San Antonio, TX; and numerous beloved second and third cousins. She leaves behind many friends and clients still stunned at her sudden passing. She will be greatly missed.
A memorial celebration will take place Saturday, 10:30 a.m. October 21, 2023, at First Christian Church, 2659 First Street, Napa, CA, 94558
