Alice Marie Baker

Alice Marie Baker passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on June 10, 2020 in Napa, California at the age of 96.

Alice was born on February 28, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to Lee and Maude Starr.  She graduated from high school in Walnut Creek in 1942.  She married Tom Moreland in 1943 and gave birth to her son Carl in May, 1944.  Being widowed, in her early 20’s, with a young son, and living in San Francisco, she started working at Southern Pacific as a comptometer (calculator) operator. 

Her favorite activity associated with this position was enjoying lunch for 35 cents at the cafe across the street.  For social interaction, she joined Arthur Murray Dance Studio and at 26, she met fellow student, Spencer Baker.  They danced their way through a courtship and were married on December 30, 1950.  In 1961, they adopted Alice’s niece, Carol whom they raised as their daughter.  They moved to Napa in 1964.  They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2010.  
Alice is preceded in death by her husband Spencer and will be deeply missed by her son: Carl and wife, Judy (Kent, WA) and daughter Carol (Napa, CA) and grandchildren, Jeremey, Justin and Donya. 

Alice was known for her beautiful smile and quiet and mild spirit.  While she was always soft and loving, her faith in her God, Jehovah, was as strong as steel and she dedicated her life to serve Him in 1958.  Her strong faith inspired her to be a loving wife and mother and an unforgettable example to all those around her.  Her sweet and cheerful demeanor never left her under the most trying circumstances.  

Alice loved gardening and painting.  Her paintings were beautiful and reflected her love of the Bible’s promise of paradise to come.

Alice will be greatly missed by her family, friends, those in the congregation, those whom she met in her ministry and those who cared for her needs towards the close of her life.
