Welcome to the memorial page for

Margaret Hoover

June 6, 1915 ~ November 12, 2017 (age 102) 102 Years Old

Margaret Clark Hoover lived 102 years and 5 months. She was born June 9, 1915 in Laws (Inyo County) the second child and only daughter of Ray Thompson Clark and Lucy Allie Howlett Clark. In 1919 the family moved to Napa and lived on Clark Avenue.

Margaret’s Mother Lucy began teaching in the Atlas Peak region and moved her children to Foss Valley in 1924. They lived in a cabin with a dirt floor, no running water or electricity. They lived there until Spring of 1927 at which time Margaret attended Lincoln Grammar School with her two younger brothers Ray and Warren.

Margaret Graduated Napa Union High School in 1933 and San Jose State in 1938. She earned her Teaching Credentials at University of California at Berkeley and taught in Napa and Solano School Districts.

In 1939 she accepted the Marriage proposal of Albert Edison Hoover. They enjoyed the World’s Fair that year. They married on June 23, 1940 and spent their honeymoon on a boat Al built himself. She was always so proud that Al had painted the water line accurately before the boat had ever been in water. Together they built the home she would live in for 77 years until the last day of her life.

In 1948 they adopted a newborn girl and named her Lynette Darlene. They travelled as a family to State Parks across the United States before Lynette began school.

Margaret was widowed in 1963 and never remarried.

She travelled to every continent except Antarctica and was enriched greatly by seeing such a variety of cultures. As an avid Photographer, she took thousands of pictures and created slides and family photo albums. She was a long time member of Napa Valley Camera Club.

During the 1980’s Margaret cared for her Mother for 7 years until she passed quietly in her sleep in Margaret’s home at the age of 104.

Margaret loved art, cooking and history. Her landscape and barn watercolor paintings are enjoyed in many homes, especially her own.

She was a Charter Member of the Napa County Historical Society and served faithfully into her 90’s until her eyesight was gone. She also wrote and donated numerous manuscripts about Napa’s past.
