1922- 2018
Herbert Arnold Meister, a 7 decade resident of Napa, passed away April 9th, 2018 just prior to his 96th birthday.
Born and raised in the greater Chicago area, Herb was 14 when his mother unexpectedly passed due to illness and he became a ward of the Lutheran Church, for which he was forever grateful. With the support of the church, Herb finished school, then a couple years later he was drafted into the US Army where he proudly served in the Pacific theatre until being discharged and returning home to Chicago a few months after V-J day.
Shortly after returning home, Herb was contacted by his army sergeant, Tom Bentley, to see if he was interested in “coming out west to work for PG&E.” Little did he know that accepting Tom’s offer would ultimately result in a career in the power industry, as well as an introduction to his future bride, Tom’s sister!
After a brief courtship, Peggy Ann Bentley and Herb married in 1946. Throughout their 72 years together he was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was always generous with his time and talent to his family, friends, and neighbors.
Never forgetting the support he received as a teen after his mother’s passing, Herb continued serving his community as a dedicated and proud member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Napa, the 20-30 Club, and the Rotary Club of Napa.
Preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Herb is survived by his wife Peggy Meister of Napa; daughters Sue Edwards (Cal) of Washington and Laura Meister of Napa; son Daniel Meister (Kim) of Napa; adopted daughter Mona Babin of Rohnert Park; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and dear friends Bob and Marie Mueller previously of Napa.
Herb and his family wish to express their gratitude to the staff at The Meadows and Napa Senior Living for their care and compassion. Herb requested that no public service be held and that any donations on his behalf be made to St John’s Lutheran Church, 3521 Linda Vista Ave, Napa, CA 94558.
