Ernest James Grosskopf

Ernest James “Jim” Grosskopf passed peacefully in Napa at Queen of the Valley Hospital on Monday September 4th with his family by his side.

Jim Grosskopf was born in San Francisco on August 21,1947 to Ernest and June Grosskopf. Jim grew up in the bay area and graduated from Capachino High School in San Bruno CA, Class of 1966. His senior class voted him “best personality”. He served in the Air Force in the medical core for 4 years and was honorably discharged. He met and married his wife Susan Werner in 1971. He completed his radiology technologist degree at Penninsula Hospital. He then worked as an X ray technologist while attending business school in the evenings.

He had a distinguished career in Medical Imaging and Cardiovascular Services. He managed departments at Queen of the Valley Medical Center, the former California Pacific Medical Center and John Muir Medical Center. He retired as Vice President Of Operations at Childrens Hospital in Oakland in 2012. After retirement he consulted in the design and building of medical imaging centers.

He joined the American Health Radiology Administrators in 1976. He was awarded a fellowship in 1995 for recognition of significant contributions to the industry and professional association.

Jim enjoyed gardening, projects around the house and going to baseball games. When he wasn't working he loved to drive to the coast and get a bowl of clam chowder and always looked forward to a nice glass of chardonnay.

Jim was a devoted husband, father and friend to many and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Susan Grosskopf, daughter Kim (Rob) Klingman, son Aaron Grosskopf, Sisters Gail (Jim) Manwearing, Carol Covell and predeceased by his brother Walter Grosskopf.

A celebration of life will be held on October 21st.
