James Wesley Greenwood passed away on March 4, 2024. James, better known as Wes, was born to James and Mildred on December 29, 1941, in Ohio. A few years later, the family moved to Richmond, CA where he and his brother, Cliff, developed a love of sports and all things competitive. After graduating from Richmond High School, Wes became a pitcher for San Francisco State’s baseball team and was an important part of a successful traveling softball squad with lifelong friend Larry Sheppard. With a Master’s Degree under his belt, Wes then began a 36-year career in education as a PE teacher at Albany High School, and later Ygnacio Valley High, where he coached multiple sports, leading to five football championships and a place in Ygnacio's Hall of Fame.
In 1966 Wes met the love of his life, Patricia, whom he married in 1968. For the majority of their marriage, they lived in Concord, until they moved to Napa in 2019 to be closer to family. Wes is survived by Patricia and his two sons, Cliff and Chad Greenwood, and his grandson, Charlie, all of whom he loved very much. He is preceded by his four brothers, Cliff, Harvey, John, and Bob. Aside from his love of family and sports, Wes was an avid traveler and music fan. He was also a devout Catholic who volunteered his time at St. Bonaventure’s food pantry and garden. Those who knew Wes enjoyed his infectious laughter and sense of humor. Although he could appear tough on the outside, Wes was a softie at heart, and he will be missed. We, the family, would like to thank Berkshire Assisted Living for their care and compassion for Wes. We would also like to invite Wes’ friends and family to join us for his service and reception at 11:00 AM on April 8, 2024, at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa, CA.
