Ross Harrison Hall

August 24, 1936 ~ June 15, 2016 (age 79) 79 Years Old

Ross Hall passed away June 15, 2016 after a long illness.  He was born in Oakmont, Pennsylvania on August 24, 1936 to Harry and Nannette Hall.  He has a sister Marguerite Schaefer who he lovingly nicknamed Maud.  He went to school in Pennsylvania and high school at Valley Forge Military Academy.  He belonged to its band and proud to march with them in the inaugural parade for President-elect Dwight Eisenhower.

Survived by his sister "Maud" of Delaware, his wife of 32 years Christine (Schelling) and sons Jason (Chrissy) Cole of Napa and Toby Cole of Folsom, and, the beloved "Grampy" to Mackenzie, Jacklyn, Piper and Charli Jane of Napa and Connor and Kendall of Folsom.

Ross told many stories about his first job when he was a teenager, commercial fishing.  A tough job, but one he loved.   He served proudly in the U.S. Navy earning many awards and medals among which was the Silver Star Medal for his bravery in action during the Vietnam War.   After 20 years of worldly travel and experiences he retired from the Navy and began working at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.  He was involved in many projects most notably being the Ship Superintendent of the USS Parche.  Many times he said, "if they aren't writing about you on the bathroom walls then you are not doing a good job.”

He retired once again and not to become idol he began working for Swanson Vineyards and Winery as the Estate and Vineyard Manager.  This being an entirely different vocation than his past he took every offered viticulture class at Napa Valley College giving his normal 100% and completed each course with an "A.”

As with all his jobs he enjoyed working at Swanson's for 14 years ‘till illness forced his retirement.

Ross had a wide range of interests; he was an avid reader and enjoyed flying private planes and sailing in his earlier years.  He sailed solo to Hawaii several times.  “The rougher the sea, the better!”

Ross was a patriot and belonged to many veteran organizations, including the American Legion Post 113 and Vietnam Veterans 702.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in Ross' memory to Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, (www.fallenheroesfund.org) or any veteran’s organization that may be dear to your heart.

A memorial ceremony will be held at Tulocay Funeral Home, 411 Coombsville Road on Wednesday, June 22 at 1:00pm.  Please come and share your stories of your memorable times with Ross.
