1947-2018
Max died peacefully on Monday, March 26th surrounded by his loving family and close friends.
Max was born in Puebla, Mexico on September 11, 1947. In 1989, he came to the Napa Valley exploring new opportunities. Higher education was the guiding light whose path he would always follow in life. First he enrolled at the Napa Valley College where he earned his AA in Psychology. He subsequently transferred to Pacific Union College in Angwin, CA where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree and then moved to Walla Walla Washington to attend Walla Walla College to pursue a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Later, in order to apply this education to his passion for helping others in need, he moved back to Napa and began working in various local agencies such as Nuestra Esperanza, Clinic Ole, and most recently the Up Valley Family Center of Napa County and La Luz Center in Sonoma. He especially loved helping the youth and also working with families.
He enjoyed going on long walks, visiting local beaches and recently going on train rides. He had a love for baseball and was a great fan of the San Francisco Giants. Most of all, he loved spending time with his adoring grandkids.
He is preceded in death by his oldest son, Tona Hernandez. He is survived by his ex-wife Maria Hernandez, his companion Rose Schollar, daughters Mali (Gerry) Martinez, Ita (Roy) Hernandez-Maldonado, his son Q, and grandkids Itzy, Benjamin, Elena, and Mateo.
Visitation at Tulocay Chapel, 411 Coombsville Rd, Napa, Monday April 2nd, from 5:00—6:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service. Private interment will be at Tulocay Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund will be established through the St. Helena Unified School District to benefit students who would like to pursue a college education, as this was one of his hopes for the youth. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Terri Linder, school counselor, at (707) 967-2740.
