John Henry Hartley went home to be with his Lord on January 1, 2017. He was born in 1927 in Wabash, Indiana to parents Edna and John Hartley. John grew up and went to schools in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947. He married Eunice Rotz in 1947 and had two children, Steve and Janice. He moved to Chandler, Arizona in the early 50’s then moved his family to Prescott, Arizona in 1957. In Prescott, he set down roots where his career was managing Barrows Furniture. He was active as a volunteer Sheriff’s deputy and helped organize the Prescott Volunteer Fire Department. He acted as assistant chief for this department for many years. He was recognized numerous times by the City of Prescott for his many civic activities including the forming of the Yavapai Youth Center and activity in the Prescott Lions and Kiwanis clubs.

John moved to Vallejo, California, in 1972, purchasing Staats & Bell Furniture. He sold this store in 1977 and moved to American Canyon. He worked with Allen & Benedict Furniture in Napa until he joined his daughter in purchasing Carpets Unlimited of Napa (now Abbey Carpets Unlimited) in 1985. He worked there until his retirement.

John met Gloria Matthes in 1986 and they were married in 2000. Gloria has been his constant companion for over 20 years. Because of her love and exceptional care giving, John was able to live a full life until this last month. She took classes to enable her to give him in home dialysis every day during this last year. Her unselfish care is so appreciated by her family and she is truly an angel in disguise.

John is survived by his wife, Gloria; son Steve Hartley (Kay), and daughter Janice Clifton (Jon).
