John Leonard Haag

July 7, 1935  -  June 21, 2016

John Haag passed away on June 21 at his home in Berkeley.  John was born and raised in Hanford, Ca.  His parents were Geraldine and Leonard Haag.  John married Greta Iverson of Napa, in 1959.

John received a master’s degree in architecture from UC Berkeley in 1958 where he met Greta while hashing at her sorority.  After their marriage, they spent three years in England where John was stationed as a commissioned officer in the Air Force.  They also lived in Stockholm where Greta studied at the university and John continued his practice as an architect.

John and Greta then returned to Berkeley where John spent over 50 years working as an architect, in the profession he loved.  For many years John was an associate with Joseph Esherick and his firm in San Francisco where he helped design many buildings in the Bay Area; including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Cannery in SF, numerous buildings on the Stanford and UC Berkeley campuses and private residences.  After leaving Esherick’s firm John continued his architecture practice with other numerous projects.

John and Greta shared a passion for beagle dogs.  Starting with a Christmas gift of a puppy, they began raising and showing beagles, with two of their dogs winning Best of Breed at the Westminster Dog Show.

John is survived by his twin brother James and his wife Elizabeth, his sister Elizabeth and husband Michael di Pretoro, mother-in-law Adelle Iverson Payne, sister-in-law Karen Wendel, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held on July 6 at 11:00 am at Tulocay Funeral Home in Napa.  Reception to follow.
